Cadets Circuit Ready!

Cadets with Sgt Gohl mapping out a circuit

Last week, we ran a fantastic aviation training evening focused on teaching our cadets how to fly a full circuit procedure using correct air traffic control radio communications. Under the expert tuition of Sgt George Gohl, cadets were guided through each stage of the circuit and shown how pilots communicate clearly and safely with ATC.

We began with the theory, using model aircraft to physically map out the circuit and help cadets visualise take-off, crosswind, downwind, base and final. This hands-on approach really helped them understand how the aircraft moves around the pattern and why spacing, altitude and timing are so important.

After that, the cadets swapped roles and practised being air traffic controllers themselves. They learned how to issue instructions, acknowledge calls, and coordinate aircraft movements — gaining a proper appreciation of the teamwork between pilots and ATC that keeps the airfield running smoothly.

The highlight of the evening was taking everything they’d learned into the flight simulator. Here they were able to fly the circuit for real, putting their radio calls, procedures and newfound confidence to the test in a realistic environment.

Training sessions like this are invaluable in preparing our cadets for their first real flight and giving them a deeper understanding of the world of aviation. A huge thank you to Sgt Gohl for delivering such high-quality instruction and making the evening a brilliant success.
