Bronze Leadership Course

Over the Easter weekend, 3 cadets from 1324 (Hawker Blackburn) Squadron joined the instructors of 195 (Grimsby) Squadron, who put them through their paces with some enhanced leadership training.

Throughout the weekend, the cadets were required to work together with colleagues they’d never met before, learning to discover and leverage their strengths and weaknesses, as well as refining their understanding of briefing tools such as SMEAC and PICSIE.

The cadets successfully pass the course

SMEAC stands for:

  • Situation (explain the situation)

  • Mission (explain the specific thing you need to achieve within that wider situation)

  • Execution (how you will achieve your mission, specifically)

  • Any questions? (invite clarification and challenge from the team)

  • Check of Understanding (test that the team have understood)

PICSIE stands for:

  • Plan

  • Initiate

  • Control

  • Support

  • Inform

  • Evaluate

The team receive their brief from the designated leader

“I really enjoyed it to be completely honest, I feel like it was a great use of a weekend, the staff were great and the activities were set up very well, so there were no problems that we ran into. On Saturday, we did mainly classroom work (which was essential for the theory behind Bronze level leadership) but we did a couple practical lessons which we did to try and get to know each other”

The team work together and proceed with caution

“I really enjoyed it, when you think of classroom based activities you would think it would be really boring however I really enjoyed it. I’ve learnt a lot that I can use throughout any tasks I do”

- Cadet Sergeant Max Cuckoo

“I think it was very informative and built on our blue leadership skills further providing us with a greater understanding of leadership. On Sunday, we did our practical assessments where we turned up, got briefed, explained the task at hand to a team using SMEAC and using PICSIE throughout the task”

- Cadet Grace Kenny
